The difference between Global Shutter and Rolling Shutter

Don’t know how to choose Global shutter or Rolling shutter? Please refer to below main differences so that you can choose the right one according to your projects.

1. Image Capture Method

Global Shutter: Captures the entire image simultaneously, meaning all pixels are exposed to light at the same time. This method eliminates motion artifacts, making it ideal for fast-moving subjects and dynamic scenes.
Rolling Shutter: Captures images sequentially, line by line. This can lead to distortions, such as skewing or the “jello effect,” particularly when capturing fast-moving objects or during rapid camera movements.

2. Motion Distortion

Global Shutter: No motion distortion occurs, allowing for clear and accurate representation of fast-moving objects. This is crucial in applications like sports photography or scientific imaging where precision is essential.
Rolling Shutter: Prone to spatial distortion during fast motion, which can result in images that appear warped or skewed. This is because different parts of the image are captured at slightly different times.

3. Cost and Complexity

Global Shutter: Generally more expensive to produce due to the complexity of the sensor design. This can make global shutter cameras less common in consumer-level products.
Rolling Shutter: Typically cheaper and easier to manufacture, making them more prevalent in consumer cameras and smartphones. They can offer good performance in static scenes or slower motion.

4. Light Sensitivity and Dynamic Range

Global Shutter: May have reduced dynamic range and light sensitivity compared to some rolling shutter sensors, although this can vary by model.
Rolling Shutter: Often provides better dynamic range and low-light performance, particularly in scenarios without rapid movement, making them suitable for general photography.

5. Application Suitability

Global Shutter: Preferred for high-speed photography, scientific applications, and environments with strobe lighting, where uniform exposure is necessary.
Rolling Shutter: Suitable for general photography and applications where fast motion is not a primary concern, offering efficient data handling and smaller file sizes.

Our SC132GS USB Camera Module can capture video at a high frame rate of 120 frames per second (fps), the module utilizes a global shutter technology, which allows it to capture images without the motion distortion, this is particularly beneficial for high-speed imaging applications.

The module is compatible with various operating systems, including Windows, Android, and Linux, facilitating integration into diverse projects.

It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including face recognition, biometrics, driver monitoring systems (DMS), advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), robotics, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) .
